First time to celebrate christmas party with my colleagues. Been working there for a couple of months now and I am so loving these Jamaican people. Well, at first I really dont understand when they speak to each other. Man, they speak so fast! I thought it’s not English. But eventually, I’ve learned that it is indeed, English. Broken English or “Patois” (Patwa) to be exact. Let me give you some examples:
- Mi cant bodda with da foolishness (I can’t be bothered with the foolishness)
- Mi a go bak a wuk pan Chewsday (I am going to work on Tuesday)
- Chobble nuh nice. Yuh inna big chobble (Trouble is not nice. You’re in big trouble)
- Yuh nuh dun yet? (You haven’t finished, yet?)
- Ello, mi can help yuh wid someting? (Hello, can I help you with something?)
- Lawd ‘ave mercy pan Miss Percy. (Lord have mercy with Miss Percy)
- Cuyah, she gwan lak she nice eee? (Look at that, she acts like she is so nice)
How on Earth could Asian people understand that? But I’ve said on my previous posts, Filipinos are clever and I am slowly picking up the way they talk. I think I could speak Patois as well few more days from now. Char!
Anyhow, I did enjoyed the party even for just a couple of hours. Lotsa unfamiliar foods but even so, I still ate ‘em. Delicious.
But what I am so happy about is seeing the smiles plastered on our resident’s faces as they spend quality time with their relatives and friends. They are all dressed up looking smart and nice and I can see through their eyes that they are indeed, blissful.
I love ‘em all and l am so looking forward for more happy moments with them for the coming new year.
